TECHNICIAN-ANESTHESIA - New Mowasat Hospital

JOB SUMMARY
The Technician-Anesthesia operates as part of the anesthesia team assisting the anesthesia doctors in the anesthetic management of procedures and interventions which require anesthesia; in the preparation of anesthetics, drugs, fluids, and equipment; and in the physiological monitoring of patients. Sets up, operates, monitors and maintains anesthesia equipment.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Monitors Operation Room (OR) schedule to determine requirements of anesthetic service for all procedures and ensures efficient arrangement.
2. Checks daily the OR schedule and prepares the anesthesia working station, including setting up and calibrating anesthesia machine and monitors.
3. Maintains, calibrates and trouble shoots the various anesthesia equipment used.
4. Stocks and maintains bar levels of all anesthesia supplies and drugs; assures proper supply of drugs from pharmacy and consumables & reusables from medical stores.
5. Prepares devices and equipment required for airway management; such as laryngoscopes, oxygen masks, end tracheal tubes of different sizes and types, laryngeal mask airways, oro- and naso-pharyngeal airways, and bougies.
6. Prepares devices and equipment necessary for regional and local blocks; e.g. spinal, epidural, local intravenous blocks.
7. Performs regular check of crash trolley and difficult intubation trolley.
8. Prepares anesthesia equipment for the indicated procedures; disinfects, cleans, sets, calibrates, and monitors devices during intervention.
9. Waits for patients in the preoperative area, checks patient data and file before transfer to OR and accompanies patient to OR.
10. Helps in patient's positioning on operating table, and helps to ensures that the patient does not suffer from any discomfort or injury.
11. Prepares and positions patients on heating/cooling mattresses, adjusts in accordance to the instructions; attaches mattresses to the heating/cooling machine and regulates for proper temperature.
12. Assists the anesthesiologist in the administration and maintenance of general, regional and local anesthesia.
13. Assists anesthesiologists in the preparation and labeling of syringes of anesthetic/adjuvant drugs needed. Prepares IV drips, infusion pumps and blood sets.
14. Helps the anesthesiologist to establish peripheral or central intravenous access or arterial lines. Helps to collect and send arterial and venous blood samples.
15. Attaches required monitors and ensures their proper functioning.
16. Prepares intravenous infusions of medications such as cardiotonic drugs for insertion into infusion apparatus.
17. Sets up the pump devices for infusion of blood and blood components with appropriate filters. Preparesthe required infusion as instructed. Sets and attaches blood warmers and blood pumping apparatus to patients when needed.
18. Sets up monitors and records patient's vital signs.
19. Assists Anesthesiologist to insert arterial catheter needles and brachial & internal jugular catheters, attaches it to the transducers and flushes with saline solution.
20. Obtains arterial blood gases from arterial needle and sends to Blood Gas Laboratory for analysis; records results on proper forms.
21. Accompanies patients during shifting from OR to recovery room (RR)/ post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) or Intensive Care unit (ICU). Helps in proper stabilization of patients before leaving RR, and endorses patients' information and attached drug or fluid infusions to the concerned staff in PACU.
22. Post operatively cleans and repairs anesthesia working station and equipment and performs preventive maintenance of equipment to ensure proper functioning.
23. Maintains supplies and collaborates with other departments.
24. Ensures proper functioning of equipments; repairs and performs routine preventive maintenance.
25. Identifies malfunctioning equipments, troubleshoots equipment problems and refers serious problems to technical repair personnel.
